JEAN MCKENZIE, 86, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2016, at Charleswood Care Centre in Winnipeg, MB. Born January 16, 1930 in Sturgeon Landing, Saskatchewan, she is predeceased by her husband, Morley Angus McKenzie and son Mark Morley McKenzie.
Jean was raised in Flin Flon, MB where she met and married Morley in June of 1952. She was an active person and enjoyed golf and curling. Jean was a member of the Western Canadian Curling Championship team representing Flin Flon with Ethel Write, Phyllis Floch and Norma McLean in 1955.
By September of 1962 Morley and Jean had two sons, Mark and Craig. Jean was blessed with a number of opportunities to see many parts of the world when the family moved to La Oroya, Peru in South America and then to Bonao in the Dominican Republic.
Returning to Canada upon Morley’s passing in 1973, Jean became the pillar of strength for the family, taking on numerous jobs including working in retail, warehousing and finally as a travel agent at P. Lawson Travel where Jean was able to continue exploring the world, visiting almost every corner of the globe.
Jean was the backbone of the family and did whatever necessary to raise her two sons. Both graduating university, obtaining good careers and happy families. Although tough in many ways, she was always loving and caring with her family. Without hesitation she was always there to guide and support them. Her sons wanted for nothing.
She was a private person but maintain solid friendships with a number of people including Maureen Stevens of Port Roberts Washington, whom she met in the travel industry.
Upon her retirement, Jean moved to Winnipeg Beach where she enjoyed many years of the quiet country life. Something she always enjoyed. She was a board member of her condominium corporation and did things in the community like deliver meals for Meals on Wheels throughout the Interlake Region.
As life became more difficult, Jean returned to Winnipeg where she lived out her remaining years at Shaftsbury Park Retirement Residence and Charleswood Care Center.
Survivors include her son Craig McKenzie with wife Loralie and grandchildren Keenan and Sahra of Winnipeg, daughter in law Donna with grandkids Holly and Leah of Pickering Ontario, sister Audrey Perepeluk (Simons) of XXXXX, Ontario, niece Judy (Perepeluk) and husband David Burrows, and many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews throughout Canada.
Services will be held at the Hillside Cemetery, Flin Flon, Manitoba on Friday February 26, 2016 at 11:00 A.M.. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society at 10 – 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg MB, R3C 4G2.
