COVID-19 case loads in Manitoba are slowly but surely dropping. For the first time since March, the province is now down below 1,000 active cases of the disease and only 34 net new cases were found Tuesday.

The province with arguably Canada’s worst third wave of COVID-19 is now pulling out of the tailspin, with most recent days seeing low case counts. Only two new cases of COVID-19 were found in the Northern Health Region (NHR), both in the Grand Rapids/Misipawistik/Moose Lake/Mosakahiken/Easterville/Chemawawin district. There are currently 219 active COVID-19 cases in the NHR, including five in the Flin Flon/Snow Lake/Cranberry Portage/Sherridon district.

No new outbreaks of COVID-19 were announced in Manitoba July 6.

A total of 73 people are listed as active cases in The Pas/OCN/Kelsey district, while another 67 people are active in Shamattawa/York Factory/Tataskweyak/Split Lake. Cases are also slowly rising in the far north district of Sayisi Dene/Tadoule/Barren Lands/Brochet/Northlands/Lac Brochet, located along the Manitoba/Nunavut border. The district, which is so remote that it is currently unconnected to the provincial highway system, now has 19 cases active as of July 6.

All other northern districts have fewer than 20 active cases.

Vaccine rates remain high in the NHR, with 70 per cent of people in the Flin Flon/Snow Lake/Cranberry Portage/Sherridon district having received at least one vaccine dose. Five NHR districts have at least 80 per cent of all eligible people at least partially vaccinated - the Cross Lake/Pimicikamak district (89 per cent), Island Lake district (84.2 per cent), Bunibonibee/Oxford House/Manto Sipi/Gods River/Gods Lake (82.7 per cent), Norway House (80.9 per cent) and Bay Line (80.8 per cent).

More than 50 per cent of all eligible NHR residents have received both COVID-19 vaccine doses.
