Two weeks ago, the season seemed over for the Hapnot Kings soccer team. After a disappointing finish at the zone championships, the Kings hadn’t earned a spot in provincials.
Late last week, that changed.
The Kings have made it into the tournament as a reserve team after a club in a wildcard game, the WC Miller Collegiate Aces from Altona, pulled out of the tournament.
The Kings join nine other teams at this year’s tournament at Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler. One of the other teams, the Oscar Lathlin Collegiate Wolverines from OCN, defeated the Kings on their way to a zone title.
The Hapnot Kweens are taking part in the girls’ provincial tournament, also being held in Winkler. The Kweens qualified directly for the tournament after an undefeated season and a 1-0 victory over Thompson’s RD Parker Collegiate Trojans in the zone championships.
Provincials start today, Friday, in Winkler, and continue through Saturday. At this week’s Flin Flon school board meeting, board chairman Murray Skeavington wished both the Kings and Kweens good luck.
