Just as the open sign went up at the Phantom Lake Golf Course for another season, Mother Nature turned on the taps, as it poured rain and then snowed.
This year’s opening date of May 6 is earlier than last year by roughly two weeks.
The rain and snow may have kept golfers away for a few days, but current membership numbers indicate it won’t last for long.
Golf pro Chris Doyle says the club’s membership drive has been going well and he anticipates a busy season.
In an effort to increase membership again this year, the club will be closed for the first two weeks for all non-members.
The club held a trial run by closing the course to non-members for one week last year and has now extended it to two weeks.
Doyle says the members-only golfing often encourages those who were undecided about getting a membership but who want to golf sooner rather than later.
Doyle will be holding ladies’ golf lessons again this year, though dates have not yet been decided.
As of press time the club’s annual Opening Day Tournament dates had not yet been set.
