Next week, voters in Creighton and Denare Beach will cast their ballots to determine who will help run their communities for the next four years. Six seats each on Creighton town council and Denare Beach village council are up for grabs.
For this week’s issue of The Reminder, we sent questionnaires on a series of local issues to candidates running in both communities. Answers were printed in our Nov. 6 edition.
All seven of the council candidates running in Creighton returned answers and each are shown below. Six of the 10 candidates running in Denare Beach also returned answers - candidates Nicole Bayless, Dale Holmgren, Paul Trottier and Beverly Wheeler did not do so in time for publication.
Election day is Nov. 13. In Creighton, voting will take place at the Creighton Town Office in council chambers from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m. Voters in Denare Beach can cast their ballots at the Denareplex Nov. 13 from 9 a.m.- 8 p.m.
Voters can also cast their ballots for members of the Creighton School Division board of trustees. The Reminder asked school board candidates their thoughts in a similar questionnaire - the results can be found here.

It is my intention to be a part of a vision for improving our community to make it a desirable location for families for years to come.

Other priorities include revitalising the Collins Street bunk/park area and working with members of our community for their input.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?

As a tri-community area, we need to collaborate and have partnerships with all communities for the improvement and development for all members within our communities, starting with recreation programs and facilities.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
I would like Creighton to become a desired location with many opportunities for families to raise their family and retire in. I am confident the town will see an influx of families coming, with the new mining opportunities opening around our community. I would like to see Creighton as the chosen location to live.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
Revitalising the Creighton Sportex, the Oval of Dreams where many youths play football and soccer and evaluating the safety for all members within our community, as well as curbs and sidewalks for safety and aesthetics within our community.

Kory Eastman
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
I believe I have gained a strong understanding of the Town’s needs and our goals and direction. I believe I can still contribute to our path for positive growth and financial strength.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I have been fortunate enough to have been elected to two terms previously, as well as over 15 years of experience I’ve had on local executive boards for groups such as the Flin Flon & District Chamber of Commerce.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
Our commitments to the Regional Economic Development Commission (REDC)
and continued interest in increased seniors’ housing in Creighton remain top priorities. Working together with other neighbouring communities in both development and tourism will continue to pay long-term dividends for Creighton, which hopefully will include the opening of housing through incentives and investor promotion.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
Sustainability is a defining issue which relies heavily on ensuring a strong “business-ready” environment and strong access to health services to help keep our retiring populations here at home.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
I think the previous councils have improved greatly on working together to advance the region as a whole, with more work needed to continue. Taxes in Creighton remain low in northern Saskatchewan, which is positive.
6. What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
I’ve learned a great deal regarding our roles over the past eight years on council and hope to continue to contribute.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
We work well together with the REDC through changes of councillors, although we could possibly look to provide more feedback to the community on the work done by the group and promote the benefits of this committee more often.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
I believe we will see more mining investment and hope to see the fruits of further tourism growth as a secondary industry. I believe the future is brighter than it may have felt, even four years ago.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
Seniors’ housing and to fully review and develop on the provinces drive towards a regional landfill, which could provide benefits to all our communities.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
Aim to have a tax advantage for residents and businesses, but make adjustments as needed to cover required capital projects. Creighton’s finances are in great shape.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
I would love to see work continue on the feasibility of investing in the Phantom Lake area for RV’s and full camping access with a dumping station, etc to retain tourists passing through, as per our previous community plan we have developed.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
The need to address rural shortages in medical and policing services. These vital services are understaffed, which puts a strain on those working in these areas now, which needs to be addressed with more people and candidates.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
I can provide my experience and understanding of the issues in our communities to work together with others to continue to work to goals we set in our community plan.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
None.

My name is Darren Grant. My wife Cynthia and I own Grant Funeral Home & Crematorium. We have two adult daughters, Hannah & Abbigale and have lived in Creighton since 2008. My reason for running as a candidate is to see my community and surrounding area thrive and grow.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I was first elected to Creighton town council in 2009 and since then, I have gained valuable experience while working with my fellow councillors, town administration and staff, as well as provincial and federal officials.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
My top priority for Creighton would be more housing options, such as apartments and townhouses for younger families and seniors, as well as a long-term care facility. This could be accomplished by lobbying both levels of government, as well as approaching builders and developers.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
The biggest issues we are facing are increasing costs of operations, as well as housing options. By being fiscally responsible and searching for new revenue options such as grants, we can minimise ever-increasing expenses. As mentioned prior, by lobbying the provincial and federal governments as well as approaching builders and developers, we could possibly find incentives and revenue to accomplish more options for housing.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
Past town councils of Creighton have left us in a great position. They accomplished this by being proactive as well as sticking to their budgets.
6 .What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
With my previous years on council, I have learned what my duties and responsibilities are.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
As I have stated for years, we need to continue to seek and attract opportunities, pool our services and ideas as well as investigate overlapping services for cost-saving measures. Since the development of the FDC Regional Economic Development Commission, the three communities are meeting regularly and working together towards new opportunities. I believe this is the right direction for all the communities.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
The next five years are going to be interesting times for our region, with the development of Foran’s McIlvenna Bay as well as other projects. With this, we can see positive outcomes for our community and area such as economic growth for local business, as well as new residents for our community.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
The community’s top priority on infrastructure should continue to be proactive, by having a forward vision with regards to maintenance, replacement and future needs.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
My stance on taxes and local finances is simple - to work within our budget. This will keep us in the strong financial position we currently are in and eliminate the need for tax increases.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
As mentioned before, housing options and a seniors’ long-term care facility.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
Housing, health care and cost of living.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
All I can say is please go vote. We have a great group of candidates.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
(note: the candidate did not supply an answer for this question)
Dan Hlady
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
My name is Dan Hlady and I am running for a continuing term with the Town of Creighton. I am a local business owner and entrepreneur in the communities and volunteer with local organizations as well. I ran for town council and am running once again to help keep our local community governance in the community’s interest.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I have served for two four-year terms in elected office.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
I feel that continuing project ideas that have been brought forward by the local residents would be a top priority - continuing to listen to them for new and better ideas and to bring them to accomplishment.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
I believe that public safety has been brought forward by the residents and I feel that if elected, continuing to working with the local community leaders and authorities and addressing concerns from the community members quickly will help with public safety. I believe that Creighton has been keeping up with local infrastructure and repairs and am looking forward to new projects in the future.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
I believe that the previous local council worked very well together and performed their duties professionally and admirably during good times and tough times over the last four years.
6 .What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
I have had the privilege of learning more about the duties and responsibilities of the governance and operations of our amazing community over the last several years. I believe that there will always be more to learn and if elected, I will put that knowledge back into our community.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
Yes, the community works very closely together on many projects and services with its neighbours and other local communities. This has always been an area of interest for me because while that should be simple, that hasn’t always been the case. I feel the current council has worked on this and will continue with the other communities to facilitate simplicity in shared vital services. I know continuing pressure on government will be the key to improve services.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
I see a bright future for our entire local area in the next five years. I feel there will be growth in employment, housing and residents from now into the future. I have heard from newcomers to the community that they love what our area has to offer and believe that it is a great community to live in.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
I believe our community has been keeping up with local infrastructure, but want to make sure that we keep on top of the services that we have. I understand the importance of roads, water service, utilities and recreation infrastructure is important and would continue to help keep them in check. I feel there is some infrastructure that may need to be reviewed for replacement in the future and would embrace the opportunity to help the community when needed.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
I believe our local property taxes have been kept to some of the lowest rates, compared to other communities within the province. I feel that our local finances have been at a healthy fiscal level.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
I would always be open to pursuing new projects, but none come to mind. I think that keeping an open mind to renewing a green space or a local gardening area could be looked at - a baseball batting cage or a local dog walking area could be considered.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
I think that health care clarity is one area that comes up front and centre. As I said before, what seems like an item that should be so simple can become so complicated. It feels that policy and procedure is put front and centre before people.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
Good day, residents of Creighton. My name is Dan Hlady. If you are looking to keep your community flourishing and promising. consider re-electing me on election day.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
What do you feel it takes to be the best possible elected town councillor and what personal traits do you feel are needed to accomplish this publicly elected task?
Jenn Johnsgaard
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
I have lived In the community for the past 11 years and am in my 15th year of teaching at Creighton Community School. Being heavily involved in school sports has allowed me to coach kids and help develop community leaders. I enjoy fishing, skidooing, skiing and being out and enjoying nature. I decided to run for council because I love the community I live in and would like to be a part of its future. I believe I can bring a fresh perspective to council.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I was an elected treasurer of a local association and attended regular meetings in that capacity. At the municipal level, I am looking forward to being part of a group of people with various points of view and being part of a prosperous community.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
As a candidate, my top priorities would be to keep our property taxes manageable, bring more recreational opportunities to the community and keep the infrastructure of the community intact. If I am elected, I plan to engage meaningfully with my fellow council members to come up with effective solutions to challenges the community faces.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
One of the biggest issues that is facing our community is economic growth. We have a variety of empty lots. If they were marketed and affordable, we could potentially see 10-20 new builds for young families. We have need senior housing. There are always people on the waiting list looking for a retirement home or smaller homes. We have some housing, but we need more. We have a lot of potential to grow our community by bringing in new businesses to support a growing population.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
I feel previous councils have done an excellent job in managing community issues with effective communication, decisiveness and have had great vision in where they would like to see the community prosper. The visibility of recreational programming and the monthly handout keeps the community informed of any relevant necessary information, activities and events.
6. What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
Councillors have the responsibility of being trustees of the town’s finances, using the hard-earned money of our constituents effectively. Councillors listen to their constituents to see the community thrive and develop. They need to be able to work together effectively and efficiently to come up with solutions to community needs. They also need to be able to make policies and follow through on previous policies made by previous board members to ensure the community runs seamlessly.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
I feel that the three communities must work together. We are in a unique situation where we live. There are limited resources and we are a long distance from provincial help in many situations. An example of this would be how the communities worked together during this past summer when forest fires were a danger to our communities. I think the councils of each community need to be in regular communication to ensure that vital services are available to everyone.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
I would like to see the region prosper in the areas of tourism, infrastructure and employment/population growth. With new job opportunities in the mining community emerging, that could bring population growth and new businesses to town. In addition, we live in a unique place of the country that has multiple opportunities to grow in the realm of tourism and bring more business to the region.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
I feel that the community's top priorities on infrastructure should be road repair, the clean-up of derelict properties and more recreation spaces for community members.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
Taxes in Creighton are fair and equitable. I believe that Creighton’s taxes promote population growth, as it makes it more affordable for individuals to reside here. As a council member, I will ensure local funds are spent in a meaningful way to promote local growth. The decisions of past and present council members and town employees have used town funds in productive and appropriate ways.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
If I get elected, I would love to see a community gym/recreation center built in Creighton. This project could see several uses from an indoor walking track, rooms to rent out for different activities, a weight room and a full-size gym where tournaments and competitions at all levels could be held.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
A major issue that many of our community members have faced at one point or another is the lack of health services in Creighton. With the physical health needs being met by the Flin Flon hospital, mental health and neurodiverse needs have fallen short as provincial lines are firmly drawn. I would like to approach the provincial government about Creighton being a health hub of the north, with all communities being able to access the supports we could provide for the area.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
I am committed to working collaboratively with community members to address the critical issues. Together, we can thrive in a vibrant community.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
This was a comprehensive list of questions. I think you covered all of the relevant questions that voters need to know.

Denare Beach candidates
Jennifer Hysert
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
I moved to Denare Beach in 2000 with my family. Our plan was to stay for three years, but we fell in love with the community and made this our permanent home. I am a certified professional tax preparer, an advanced income tax consultant and own my own business. I have always been interested in politics and care about my community. I am great with numbers and have a solid understanding of budgeting, which I believe can be an asset for council.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
If elected, this would be my first opportunity to learn the ins and outs of a seat on council. I am a quick learner, eager to advocate and will bring a strong voice to the table for the community members I represent.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
My main goal is to make sure that the community is maintaining infrastructure and resources in a financially responsible manner. I would like to see responsible spending in areas important to the majority and assist those who have a passion for making positive change within our village and to help them bring their ideas to fruition.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
As with all communities, we are facing price increases and inflation. I have seen property taxes in surrounding communities double or even triple and I do not want this to happen in Denare Beach. With proper planning, due diligence and maintenance, I believe this can be avoided.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
Denare Beach has had a great council. I hope to become part of the team and to contribute my knowledge and experiences to keep our community moving forward in a changing economy.
6. What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
The council is elected to serve in the best interests of the municipality as a whole. The municipality is responsible for water and sewer, garbage collection, property tax, land use/ planning and development, cemeteries, animal control, roads and streets, emergency services, parks and recreation Council plays a role in determining services, policies and programs, making decisions through resolutions and bylaws and ensuring administrative practices and procedures are in place and acts within the law.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital
services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
Denare Beach is a small community and can only provide limited resources to locals. Working with surrounding communities is essential and I plan to make this a priority. The divide we have due to provincial lines needs to be addressed at a higher level and I hope to make progress on this. Lloydminister was able to incorporate, as a single city, in both Alberta and Saskatchewan with a single administration. Although this would not be my agenda, it creates precedent to push governments to acknowledge our needs.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
I have lived in the north my entire life and have seen how our communities can grow rapidly and how they can diminish just as fast. Currently, we are experiencing many changes due to the mine closure, but there are still many other resources near and around our area that will keep us thriving.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
Maintaining the basics should be our first priority. Sewer, water and road maintenance tend to come to mind as the most important, followed by the Denareplex. Other avenues of importance should include supporting local businesses interested in development, public transportation and the budget for school taxes.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
Taxes are a necessity to maintain our community standards.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
Without having reviewed any financial statements or budgets for the village, I am not in a position to responsibly pursue any major new projects.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
As mentioned in my answer for question 7, I would like to address the federal and provincial governments on the issues we have as a border community.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
I have 20 years of experience in finance, accounting and business. I am consistent, direct and have no hidden agenda. I have no problem dealing fairly with tough issues.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked
(note: the candidate did not supply an answer for this question)
Jesse Madarash
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
I had spent the first 20 years of my life living in Denare Beach. Much of my family lives here and has lived here for a long time. I’ve also lived in Flin Flon and Creighton, which gives me a unique perspective on our communities. I was a young kid who grew up here - now I have a young kid who’s going to grow up in this community. I decided to run for council to help Denare Beach be better, however I can.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I have no prior experience, but I thought going from car salesman to politician seemed pretty organic. In all seriousness, I think we need a balance of fresh perspective and experience to make our council work.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
Kids. I was one not that long ago, now myself and a lot of my friends are raising kids here. I want to make sure we give them the most our community has to offer. I think Denare is a unique place with potential for a lot of things to see and do. Business and tourism bring people to the beach and I think making that a priority for our council would bring a lot of life to our community.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
I think, like anywhere else, safety is an issue. I don’t think that has a simple fix, but I hope we can steer things in the right direction. Having more police presence in Denare would be a priority, but I understand that’s easier said than done. I would like to find ways to give the community more to do - more tourism, recreation activities, parks, things like that. I think petty crime has a lot to do with boredom, so those two priorities go together well.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
I think our previous council did a lot for our community. I’m a big fan of the encouragement they provided for citizens to install security cameras in particular. I think that new council members will have a lot to learn from veteran members.
6. What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
Honestly, not enough. However, a co-worker currently sits on Flin Flon city council, so I’ve heard parts of what his responsibilities and duties are. Again, a mix of new ideas and old experience is what I think our council needs.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
I think that our communities can benefit from some sharing of the workload and we would be a stronger voice here in the north as a region. Kids in Denare go to school in Creighton and many adults go to Flin Flon for work. Denare Beach, Creighton and Flin Flon have been closely connected forever, but I think there’s more work to do. Sharing responsibilities that these local governments have to people would be something I’d want to bring to the front of the line.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
I think Denare can use recreation and tourism to give itself a polish and grow as a great place to live. In the summer, my family would walk around Denare and I’d ramble off who lived where, whose garden we’d steal carrots out of as kids, like some sort of tour guide. I don’t think my wife cared and I know my daughter didn’t, but what they do care about is that sense of closeness in this community. I want that to be something that only improves.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
Whenever I talk about growing up at the Beach, people say it sounds like I grew up in the ‘70s, which I love - but I think some of the aged infrastructure was a big reason for that vibe. I think a lot has changed since then, but a lot can still be improved on.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
The last place we lived before moving to Denare was Flin Flon, so I don’t have a lot of negative things to say about taxes now at the Beach. Nobody enjoys taxes, but I think if people can see things actually improve using their tax money, they’re less likely to be upset about paying. Transparency and managing expectations are keys here.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
Specific projects? In a word, no - but I want to help members of our community who bring business, tourism, and recreation to Denare Beach. We’ve seen people bring in their ideas and invest their money and I want to help encourage that.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
Safety and health. I think that’s something that is very much a “big picture” issue and we’ll need big government to help make big changes. Advocating for that as loudly as possible is my goal here.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
I’m an 80-year-old man trapped in a 32-year-old man’s body with the mind of a nine-year-old. I think that helps me see different perspectives within our community
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
I would never question the diligence or skills of The Reminder.. or you, Eric.
Bruce Ritchie
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
My name is Bruce Ritchie. I’ve called Denare Beach “home” since 2014 and I am running for council in the hopes of helping ensure our community remains a place its residents love to call home. I work for the Town of Creighton and have been a member of the Denare Beach Volunteer Fire Department for the last ten years, serving as our deputy chief for the last two.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I have no experience in elected office.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
My top priorities, if elected, are spending on beach and recreational upgrades to enhance our reputation as a destination for people to come and relax, enacting a long-term plan for upgrading our ageing infrastructure and crime reduction initiatives, such as improved lighting all over the village. I plan to help promotion of our businesses while trying to attract new business ventures to our village.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
The biggest issues in the community to me are the same as my top priorities in question 3. Aging infrastructure, crime and enhancing our image from a bedroom community to a destination recreational community are at the forefront. There is money already in place to support community enhancement and infrastructure replacement just takes knowledgeable foresight and planning.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
I appreciate the work of our previous council and thank them for their service to our community. I don’t necessarily agree with some decisions made by our council; however, I am not going to criticize their decisions. I’m sure they were based on in-depth conversations and the information available to them at the time. I am running to have a voice in those conversations and be sure that the community, as a whole, is always put first.
6. What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
Working for municipalities for the better part of the last decade, I’m pretty confident I have a strong understanding the duties and responsibilities councillors have.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
I believe the tri-communities could have a more unified voice supporting all three communities. Each community has their own individual identity and issues, but what’s good for one community is usually beneficial for all three, especially on issues such as health care and attracting new people to the area. Having said that, I do feel that Denare Beach is sometimes the forgotten partner amongst the three.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
It’s truly my hope that in the next five years, our area is starting to become a renowned recreation destination. From Cranberry Portage to Denare Beach, our communities have a lot to offer outside of just being mining communities and we need to figure out a way to share our areas’ beauty and wonders with everyone.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
Not much point in laying down new pavement just to dig it up due to water leaks, so a plan to replace our ageing water and sewer lines before they start becoming a constant problem should be a top priority. If we wait to act until those lines start becoming a problem, it will be hard, if not impossible, to play catch up at that point.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
Taxes are just one of those inevitable necessities in life. Nobody likes paying them and they’ll only go up as time progresses, but at the local level, as long as residents see progress and work being done to improve/benefit the community it's an easier pill to swallow.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
Not so much new projects as improving/enhancing what we already have. Our beach is the biggest draw in our community and I’d love to see us invest in it to enhance the experience of everyone who visits it. With long wait times to get in, a new senior housing project would be nice to see as well.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
If ever presented the opportunity, what I’d like to bring to the attention of provincial and federal governments is health care in the north. Our health care is atrocious. No disrespect meant to those providing our care - you do the best with the resources you have - but it sure would be nice to not have to be farmed out to the larger cities for every little thing when those places are all so far away.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
I want to bring out the best of what Denare Beach is as a village. Your concerns are my concerns, I hope you’ll entrust me with being your council voice.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
(note: the candidate did not supply an answer for this question)
Alannah Skot
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
I decided to run for council because I wanted to be more involved in my community and I wish to see more representation of business owners and residents like myself. Being from a small town in Alberta, along with being a local business owner, I feel like I can provide different insights on local issues.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I am a newcomer to elected office.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
As a candidate, I hope to offer my knowledge as a local business owner with strategies to push the community forward in growth and development of recreational facilities. I feel like as a local tourism operator, I can offer insight to what visitors desire to experience on holidays. However, I also feel I understand what the younger generation would like to see in their community as well. I do hope to provide my services to help find funding to push these ideas through.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
I feel that development and maintenance of recreational facilities and areas could use some help. I would like to do my best in helping find grants and funding sources to make them better. In my opinion, our recreational areas not only benefit our residents, but also local tourism, which in turn helps our economy. I also recognise that crime is an ongoing problem in the community and I plan to offer my support in resolving those issues to the best of my ability.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
I think the work of previous councils has been good and they have supported the community to the best of their ability.
6. What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
I know that councillors have the duties and responsibilities to properly represent their residents. This includes issues that arise within the community, how funding is distributed and helping move Denare Beach forward as the community grows and changes naturally.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
I do feel that over the last five years, a lot has been achieved in how well these communities work together and I really hope to see that collaboration continue to flourish. I feel we could get more involvement from locals, either individually or by established groups and clubs. However, I do respect that this can be hard to accomplish when everyone leads such busy lives.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
I hope to see this region come back to life with the development of local mines such as Foran. I also believe we will see more tourists coming to experience our area for things besides fishing, thanks to the work of local tourism development.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
I feel that Denare Beach is known for its beach and that is a primary attraction for both locals and guests in the area. At this point, I feel that it is an eyesore and could be so much more. A lot has been done in the last couple of years with cleanup and development, but I would like to see that work continue and really make it the hub of the community. It truly is our local gem.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
I personally think that in our community, we are fortunate with how our finances are handled. It is not an easy task to handle taxpayers hard-earned money, let alone decide the appropriate way to spend it that will keep everyone satisfied.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
I would like to pursue and help in projects about the development of the main beach. I am sure other projects will pique my interest as well, as I have a vast desire to see this community only get better.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
I would like to highlight the issues of crime in the area. I do not think it is an issue that will ever be resolved overnight, however maybe there are things that can be done to help mitigate it.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
I offer a fresh perspective on ongoing local issues. I chose to move and establish businesses here because I love Denare Beach and I want to help it grow.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
I wish you would have asked at least one personal question as to who I am as a person - then locals could maybe see or understand our character as a person. Sometimes our hobbies and interests really reflect our values as individuals and say more as to who we will be representing on council.
Karen Thomson
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
My name is Karen Thomson. I am a retired corporate sales account manager after a 34-year career with Bell MTS. I have lived in Denare Beach for 36 years. I am married to Scott and we have two grown sons, Chris and Ben. I am seeking re-election as councillor for the Northern Village of Denare Beach because I care deeply about our community and wish to continue to serve the people of this community.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I have been a member of Denare Beach council for 18 of the past 24 years. I have held the chair position of many committees such as properties, protective services and finance. I am an active appointed representative to the Northern Gateway Museum Board. I have attended numerous SUMA (Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association) conferences as well as participation in the NREQC (Environmental Quality Committee) as alternate council rep.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
My top priorities are people and governance. Ensuring we are delivering service consistently to all residents regardless of social or economic status is top of mind. There should be no disparity between residents in how our service is delivered or managed. Bylaws related to properties should be reviewed to ensure that they remain relevant in the present day. I will seek to have this accomplished and complete by end of 2025.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
Crime and policing continue to be a hot topic and an issue for residents. Crime creates vulnerabilities for our residents that can prove difficult and unsettling. The effects of crime on our residents can be profound. With cooperation and communication between residents, law enforcement and local governments, we can make a difference. We need to be diligent recognizing and reporting unwanted activity in our community. Councils must continue to lobby for increased police protection in our area.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
There is room for improvement and I believe council can do better and should aspire to do so. I believe that council need to hold themselves to higher standards and show leadership in the community, leading by example. I feel there were decisions and actions taken that lacked in thoughtfulness and disregarded the wellbeing of others.
6 .What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
Throughout my work as councillor over the past several years, I have become very familiar with the roles and responsibilities required by councillors and strive to carry out those responsibilities in a professional and integral way. However, roles and responsibilities of councils and councillors continue to evolve and change. I welcome opportunities for self-improvement and to educate myself as necessary to achieve personal growth and to keep up to date with what is current.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
The three communities are working in partnership with each other and having meaningful conversations on our shared issues, concerns and successes. In my opinion, this has yielded positive change on how we view our area and opened communication on how we can enhance each others’ communities for our shared good and prosperity.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
Consider me an optimist. I am hopeful that economic growth opportunities will evolve and come to fruition and once again we will see employment and population growth in the region. We need to be mindful that there is still work to do and we need to take the necessary steps to ensure that we continue to promote our region as a prospective area for development whether it be mining, tourism or government.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
Maintaining infrastructure is key to keeping our community healthy. There is strict legislation to ensure responsibilities are adhered to and that we are keeping residents safe. Climate change is having a huge effect on our environment. We see evidence of this with the increase in wildfires, such as last summer. If left unchallenged, fires will be devastating. Fire protection that keeps us protected is paramount and the roles of our firefighters and readiness are vital in keeping our community safe.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
Property taxes are critical to funding our municipality. Based on my knowledge of other communities and the services we provide our residents, I feel the taxes are quite reasonable. Our community finances are sound and past council has done an excellent job of ensuring that we can go ahead with confidence regarding our fiscal situation. That said, it is incumbent on council to exercise wise decision-making practices when preparing yearly budgets and making plans for major expenditures.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
I would like to see a review of the properties bylaws to ensure they are keeping pace with current community and planning needs. I would also like to see stronger action taken on derelict properties and unsightliness. We live in a beautiful area, and I think we need to portray a good image to visitors and tourists. I have heard this echoed for some time and it is something that needs to be addressed.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
Provisioning of health care and the issues created because of the border between Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The provinces need to recognise the border and find a way to ensure that delivery of health care to Saskatchewan residents is fully transparent and seamless. Residents should never have to fight for necessary health care because of the border.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
I care about our community and local area. I care about our people and most importantly I care about doing what’s right. I will serve you, not be self-serving.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
What is your key motivator for seeking office?
Frank Wiegers
1. Tell us a bit about yourself. What made you want to run for council?
My name is Frank Wiegers. I am married, a father of three with several grandchildren. I enjoy the outdoors, fishing, hunting as well as sports. I decided to run for council again recently as I feel we are making progress through working together or jointly with Flin Flon and Creighton to lobby governments for change. Being a border community brings benefits and problems which are easier dealt with jointly.
2. What level of experience do you have with elected office?
I have been with the council for 15 years.
3. What are your top priorities as a candidate? How do you plan to accomplish them, if elected?
Crime is a top priority as well as the availability of recreational facilities and working jointly with Flin Flon and Creighton, working with the police and supporting the various recreational groups through funding and grants.
4. What do you feel are the biggest issues facing the community? What are your plans to address them?
Lack of health care in the region. Continuing to lobby the governments through the FDC joint council approach.
5. How do you feel about the work of previous local councils?
All councils have unique things to deal with, so it is not fair to judge someone through hindsight.
6. What do you know about the duties and responsibilities councillors have?
Work to improve the community and its residents.
7. Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach work together closely and share vital services. How do you feel about how the three communities work together, what needs to be improved on and how do you think it can be done?
Working jointly has become more of a priority and currently, all three councils agree it benefits all of us.
8. Where do you see the region being in the next five years? What do you think will change between then and now?
With Foran starting a new mine as well as the world needing the area’s minerals, I think the outlook is quite positive.
9. What do you feel should be the community’s top priorities on infrastructure?
Currently, we are looking to go forward with a much-needed upgrade to the wastewater plant. If all goes well, it will be dry and clean enough to be deposited in our landfill.
10. What are your stances on taxes and local finances?
Keep doing what we’re doing to keep taxes low and balanced budgets.
11. Do you wish to pursue any major new projects if elected? If so, what projects?
Foran is using natural gas to run generators for construction. After shipping and all other expenses, they say it is less than one-third the cost of propane. This is a project that needs to be looked at further.
12. If you had the chance, what local matters would you wish to bring to the attention of provincial or federal government figures?
Health care and crime.
13. In 30 words or less – what is your elevator pitch for undecided voters?
As a former tradesman ,it is important to have someone with background knowledge to help oversee projects. I am currently a council rep on the FDC, NREQC and highways committees.
14. What question or questions do you wish we would have asked?
(note: the candidate did not supply an answer for this question)
