A forest fire burning on the south shore of Amisk Lake has been contained.

The blaze, officially named the Moody fire after nearby Moody Bay, was first reported to Saskatchewan Wildfire Management on June 17 and is believed to have been ignited by a lightning strike. Estimates of the fire’s size were around 3,600 hectares in total size.

At its largest, the fire extended around the shore of McKenzie Bay on Amisk Lake and had reached Sturgeon Bay. At its closest point, the fire was about six kilometres away from Highway 167, near multiple cabin areas.

Rain in the area between June 25 and 27 kept the fire from spreading.

Two other fires in the Denare Beach Fire Prevention Area are currently undergoing assessment. The fires, labelled the Madden fire and the Gilbert fire, were 506 hectares and 184 hectares on June 29 respectively.

On June 29, a total of 17 wildfires over 100 hectares in size were burning in Saskatchewan. The Moody fire is the closest fire to the Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach area.

On the Manitoba side of the border, few fires are burning in the area around Flin Flon. A fire about 107 hectares in size was reported about 10 kilometres northeast of Snow Lake along Herblet Lake. The fire was being held in place, according to Manitoba Wildfire Management, as of June 29. Another fire near a northern community, burning within 15 kilometres of Lynn Lake, was also being held. A voluntary evacuation call for the community was issued last week, but was lifted as of June 29.

According to Natural Resources Canada, most of the area around Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach is at low to moderate risk of new fires as of June 29.
