Flin Flon and Creighton’s annual winter festival, Bust the Winter Blues, will kick off Friday with a weekend full of events for all ages.
Friday will include a card-making class for seniors at the Flin Flon Community Hall’s senior’s room and the annual Flin Flon Kinette trivia night, starting at the community hall at 6:30 p.m. for cocktails and 7:30 p.m. for the competition.
Saturday will feature the annual family fun day at the Creighton Sportex, with a free fun skate, refreshments, kids’ games, a sliding hill and bonfire and the celebrity “smooshing” contest - a four-person team skiing race - will also take place around the arena. The Phantom Lake Soccer Club will have pickup outdoor snow soccer for kids at the Creighton soccer field. In Flin Flon, the home business market will run at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church starting at 10 a.m., while a snowshoe event will take place at the Flin Flon Tourist Bureau at 5 p.m. Fireworks will be set off at the Oval of Dreams in Creighton shortly after nightfall, at 7 p.m., with Creighton hosting both a family dance at the Creighton Community Centre and a show at the Hooter starting at 10 p.m. featuring Elsaida Alerta and the Small Town Heroes, along with a karaoke night.
Sunday will feature the 49th annual Val and Ivor Hedman Memorial Centaloppet - while organizers have gone back and forth on whether to hold the event after a mild winter, it will go ahead as planned, starting at 2 p.m. on the Flin Flon Ski Club’s Valley loop. Flin Flon will host a toddler gym event at the community hall starting at 10 a.m. and a free skate at the Whitney Forum starting at 1 p.m., while the Border Explorers Snowmobile Club will host their annual poker derby starting at the Creighton Sportex - registration will open at 10 a.m. and participants are asked to come back by 4 p.m.
