Former Flin Flon Bomber Brody Robinson’s first trip to town felt like a never-ending journey.
“I showed up to Flin Flon thinking that drive was never going to end,” the Red Deer, Alberta product said. “I can’t explain how fast I fell in love with the place. … Within three weeks of being in town I had more fun than all of summer back home – from cliff diving, fishing, Sea-Doos, to camping with the team – and I got to experience my first drive-in movie. The first trip to the cabins with the team is something I’ll remember forever.”
Robinson, now 24, was acquired by Flin Flon in 2012 after he played his rookie junior season with the Drumheller Dragons of the AJHL.
While it can take a while to get to Flin Flon, the remoteness ended up being one of the aspects he appreciated most about his two seasons with the Bombers.
“After it’s all said and done, the thing I enjoyed most about playing in Flin Flon was how far out of the way it is,” Robinson said. “Teams don’t like to come up to Flin Flon to play us. We were ‘the team living on a rock up north somewhere,’ supported and held together by the entire town, and we were proud of that. Coming from a big city, the world around you in Flin Flon is just so small and simple, but yet it’s comfortable.”
Robinson said he drew the SJHL’s best billet family in Mark and Pam Davis. The couple helped make life away from home easy, he said.
Robinson also emphasized appreciation for his parents, Angela and Rob Robinson, who made the 12-hour drive to watch him play.
The gritty player was appreciated by the Bombers faithful. Robinson, who had 270 penalty minutes in three junior seasons, was named team’s Most Popular Player in his final season, 2013-14.
Four months after leaving Flin Flon, he started working in the oil and gas industry. Robinson is in his third year as an apprentice and hopes to become a red seal journeyman in September. He owns a house in Red Deer with girlfriend Melisa Kala.
