Some random tidbits and observations from the SJHL Preseason Scholarship Tournament taking place in Saskatoon. Former WHL forward Curtis Fransoo is drawing attention from a Western Hockey League scout, who was wondering what the tough forward was doing playing for the Battlefords North Stars. The unidentified scout said his team would be interested in picking him up for this season. Referee Chris Callahan was injured during the third period of the Weyburn-Nipawin game Saturday night. Callahan had knee-to-knee contact with a player in front of the Red Wing bench and had to be helped off the ice. It was a knee he had operated on last season and missed three months. NCAA scouts are not permitted to speak with the players until the tournament is over. In all, there are upwards of 100 scouts attending the event. That includes those representing the NCAA, NHL, WHL, MJHL, and other walks of hockey life. It has been reported that fifty of the sixty-one NCAA schools are represented in Saskatoon this weekend. Several SJHL teams are playing the tournament in practice jerseys. New ones for this season are still on order for a couple of teams. It appears as though the Battlefords North Stars are wearing jerseys from last season. Yorkton received good news Saturday morning when Chris Korchinski arrived at the arena. Korchinski, a talented rookie forward who played for the Yorkton Harvest last season, decided to leave the Calgary Hitmen and is expected to play for the Terriers on Sunday against Weyburn. Estevan defenseman Kade Ellis-Toddington lost several teeth on Friday after he was hit from behind by Melville's Matt Stefanishian. Ellis-Toddington spent most of the day in hospital receiving reconstruction dental work. Doctors feel Toddington could still lose a tooth or two, but many were put back into place.
