The Northern Recreation Coordinating Committee (NRCC) announced the dates and successful host community of the 2005 Northern Saskatchewan Games and Cultural Festival (NSGCF) earlier this week. The decision to host the 2005 NSGCF in Cumberland House on July 13-16, 2005, was made at the NRCC Board Meeting held on October 8th, 2003 in La Ronge, Saskatchewan. The planning process for the 2005 NSGCF began in December, 2001, following the evaluation of the 2001 NSGCF which was held in Black Lake and Stony Rapids. The NRCC determined that the 2005 NSGCF would be participation based and the host community would be determined through a north-wide, open bid process. The Games Committee is comprised of the NRCC Executive Board Members and one Gary Tinker representative. In March, 2003, bid to host packages were distributed across northern Saskatchewan. Five communities submitted bid to host applications by the May 15th, 2003 deadline. They were the northern communities of Creighton, La Loche, Ile a la Crosse, Kitsaki (Lac La Ronge Indian Band) and Cumberland House. Community applications were reviewed by the Games Committee. It was determined that all five applicants would receive community visits. The Games Committee then worked to determine a fair process in which to rate the applications and community visits. The five communities were visited by the Games Committee between June 11 and 17th, 2003. Rating results were tabulated by an impartial NRCC staff member and were then reviewed by the Games Committee. Upon this review, the Games Committee decided to award the 2005 NSGCF to the highest scoring community - Cumberland House. Date selection was determined with members of the host community in the fall, and the NRCC Board formally approved the date and site selection of the NSGCF at their October board meeting. Games Committee members that were involved with the site selection were: Randy Janvier, NRCC Chairperson - La Loche Alex Besskkaystare, NRCC Executive Board Member Ð Hatchet Lake Lionel Smith, NRCC Executive Board Member Ð Pinehouse Daniel Bear, NRCC Executive Board Member Ð Sandy Bay Ahab McKenzie, NRCC Executive Board Member Ð Stanley Mission Clinton Carriere Ð Gary Tinker representative Ð Cumberland House.
