The Melfort Mustangs swept the Notre Dame Hounds and are now en route to the Western Canada Cup.
The Mustangs, who hadn’t won an SJHL championship since 1996, hoisted the Canalta Cup last weekend.
That secured them a place in the Western Canada Cup tournament being held in Fort McMurray, Alberta this weekend.
Melfort will play against the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons, the MJHL champion Portage Terriers, the AJHL champion Spruce Grove Saints and the BCJHL champion Penticton Vees.
Games are scheduled to start this Saturday, April 25 and carry through until Sunday, May 3.
Schedule
The Mustangs will face the Portage Terriers in their first game of the round-robin action on Sunday, April 26. The following day the Mustangs will host the Spruce Grove Saints for Game 2.
Game 3 will have Melfort take on the Penticton Vees on Wednesday, April 29 with Game 4 set for Thursday, April 30 against the host Oil Barons.
There will be two playoff games on Saturday with the third- and fourth-place teams facing off first in Game 11 of the tournament. Game 12 will have the second-place and first-place teams facing off later in the day.
The winner of Game 12 will advance to the RBC Cup while the winner of Game 11 will play the loser of Game 12 to determine the second team moving onto the next level.
This year’s RBC Cup will be played in Portage la Prairie from May 9 to 17.
