Hapnot’s senior Kings and Kweens teams got on the court last Saturday in anticipation of this year’s zone tournament, which comes to Flin Flon this weekend.
The Kings, Kweens and their northern rivals, Thompson’s R.D. Parker Collegiate Trojans, met up for a quartet of games at Hapnot’s gym over the weekend. Both schools’ boys and girls sides played two games each.
It was the Kweens who would come away with the wins in both of their games, beating the larger school by large margins both times - first doubling up the Trojans 62-27 in the early game, then winning 59-39 later in the day. The Kings, on the other hand, saw little luck, losing both their matchups with the Trojans, first losing 55-40 and then losing a heartbreaking 73-71 game to finish the day.
The Zone 11 championship, the first of its kind to be held since early 2020, will be held for senior varsity boys and girls teams starting March 4. Exact schedules have not yet been set for either the boys’ or girls’ draws.
In Feb. 2020, Hapnot made it to the finals in both senior zone championships, with the Kweens bringing back what stands now as Hapnot’s most recent banner for high school sports.
The Kweens made it through their last zone tournament undefeated, playing their zone in Norway House and beating the host Helen Betty Osborne Huskies in the final, while the Kings beat both Oxford House and Norway House in the round robin and knocked off Oscar Lathlin Collegiate before losing to hosts Margaret Barbour Collegiate in the finals. The Kweens never got their shot at provincials - that tournament, which was set for March 2020, was postponed and later cancelled.
Three players from that 2020 Kweens zone champion team - Shanti Church, Katrina MacQuarrie and Cadence McIntosh - are part of this year’s Kweens roster. Another two players from the same varsity Kings team that finished second at 2020 zones are playing for Hapnot this season - Kyler Colomb and Ethan Patterson. All five of these returning players suited up for Hapnot last weekend.
