Hapnot Collegiate's soccer teams were in action this past weekend, as they hosted the Zone 11 Championships at Phantom Lake. Six girls teams and seven boys team were all competing for the championship banner and the right to represent the north at the Provincial Championships in October. In round robin action, the Hapnot Girls started out slowly with a 1-0 loss to Frontier Collegiate on Thursday afternoon. Joe A. Ross defeated Frontier Collegiate 3-2, forcing Hapnot to beat Joe A. Ross by at least two goals in their final round robin game to stay alive in the tournament. Hapnot came out with a strong effort, and Michelle Pettersen scored three goals to lead the home team over their visitors from The Pas by a score of 3-0. The win gave Hapnot a spot in Saturday afternoon's final. In the other pool, the R.D. Parker Trojans walked through unscathed, beating Norway House 9-0 and Otter Nelson 4-0. In a meaningless game, Nelson House defeated Otter Nelson 2-1. Saturday's final game saw two familiar foes take the field, as Hapnot and Thompson have met in the championship game every year. Hapnot has won the previous three contests, but went down 1-0 early in the game. A goal by Michelle Pettersen gave Hapnot new life, and late in regulation time, Eileen Pawliuk put home Pettersen's rebound to lift Hapnot over R.D. Parker 2-1, and give Hapnot their fourth consecutive banner. See 'Girls' P.# Con't from P.# Only Kate Rood has been a member of the team for all four championships.
