Get Moving Manitoba is an initiative that's designed to help Manitobans get more active. A majority of Canadians (55%) are physically inactive - and Manitoba ranks near the top at 59%. Manitoba has established a goal of increasing the number of active individuals from 41% to 51% by 2010, and the Get Moving Manitoba initiative needs your help. Get Moving Manitoba encourages individuals, families and groups to make an activity pledge to engage in regular physical activity in order to achieve health benefits. Help Manitobans get moving by organizing a physical activity event on January 7th or 8th, 2005 in your community/facility. The event can be something simple - a family skate at the rink, or maybe a drop-in fitness class. Consider organizing a walking group, or get the local school to have classes challenge each other. Organize a snowman making contest - or a cross-country ski clinic - maybe a family volleyball night at the school auditorium. The specific nature or size of the event event isn't as important as holding an event. (Please contact David Bosiak to let him know about your event - he'll post details about time, location, nature of event on the web-site.) Get Moving Manitoba is all about helping individuals get more active. Research tells us that making a pledge or developing a personal plan increases the probability of committing to the new behaviour. Get Moving Manitoba launches a website on December 4, 2004 that encourages individuals to make a personal/family/group pledge - in addition to providing information on getting and staying active; links to Physical Activity Coalition of Manitoba (PACM) member organization web-sites; and links to other sites offering physical activity information. Pledge cards are available for you to distribute at your event (for those individuals who don't have internet access) - as are posters to help you promote your event in your community. Visit the website (starting December 4th) at www.winnipeg.cbc.ca and follow the links. If you'd like to get more information about Get Moving Manitoba, want to order a supply of pledge cards or posters, or want to register your Get Moving Manitoba event, please contact: David Bosiak at (204) 782-8236 or [email protected].
