Tyson Empey has made a change of plans.

Earlier in the offseason, the now-former Flin Flon Bomber committed to Montreal’s Concordia University for the coming season.

But now the Swift Current, Saskatchewan product has committed to State University of New York at Geneseo. He will join the revered Geneseo Knights Division III men’s hockey program.

The Knights finished last season with an impressive 20-5-6 record.

“We were thrilled when we heard Tyson wanted to join our program,” said Knights assistant coach Kris Heeres. “He brings all the intangibles coaches look for in a player.”

A four-year Bomber, Empey finished his last season in Flin Flon with 29 points (14G, 15A) in 46 games and added another 11 points (5G, 6A) in 16 playoff games. He was also team captain last season, helping to guide the Bombers to their first SJHL final appearance since 1993.

“Having captained Flin Flon this past season, it is a testament to his character, work ethic and selflessness,” said Heeres. “We believe Tyson makes us a harder team to play against and is a player who will do a lot of the things that don’t necessarily get the accolades.”

In 184 games with the Bombers, Empey had 76 points (34G, 46A) and added another 18 points (8G, 10A) in 30 post-season appearances.
