Former Swan Valley Stampeders goaltender Chris Levesque had the opportunity of a lifetime on Tuesday night, as he was called up unexpectedly by the Vancouver Canucks. Levesque, who plays for the UBC Thunderbirds in the Canada West league, signed a one-day amateur contract with the Canucks and dressed as the backup to Johan Hedberg. An odd sequence of events led up to the call-up. Vancouver's starting goaltender Dan Cloutier injured his groin during the morning skate on Tuesday, and when the Canucks were unable to recall a goalie from the Manitoba Moose in time for the game, Levesque got the call. Other than a few shots in the warmup, Levesque didn't see much action. Hedberg played the entire game, which saw the Canucks beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime, although there was a close call when Hedberg was shaken up on a play racing for a loose puck. Levesque is a third-year biology student at the University of British Columbia. He has played 34 games over three seasons with the Thunderbirds. He's 0-4-1 with a 4.77 goals-against average in seven games this season. After the game on Tuesday night, Levesque headed home to hit the books for an 8:30 a.m. geography exam on Wednesday morning.
