The Flin Flon Midget 'AA' Bombers traveled to Dauphin this past weekend (January 9-11) for their first tournament play of the season. Their first game was played at 9 p.m. on Friday, against a feisty Dauphin team comprised of mainly 15 year-olds. This Dauphin team will be one to watch if they can stay together. The Bombers won this game 9-0 using great puck control and positional play. On Saturday at 3 p.m. the Bombers were involved in an SJHL style game against the Melville Millionaires. After giving up two easy goals, the Bombers responded with three of their own. Melville tied the game in the last 30 seconds of the second period from a turnover on a bad clearing attempt. However, it was all Bombers in the third period, with the game ending in an 8-3 decision for Flin Flon. Two hours after a tough battle with Melville, the Bombers met their favourite rivals, The Pas Huskies. Always interesting, intense and entertaining - both teams played hard-nose hockey. The ref let them play! The 7-3 score in favour of the Bombers could have been a lot closer if not for the incredible play of Callan Senyk in goal. Senyk made several game-saving stops early in the game and held the Bombers with a third period lead, as the Huskies dominated the play for most of the period. The Bombers took advantage of their opportunities, while the Huskies could not finish. The Bombers entered Sunday's final game against Swan River undefeated. The game against Swan River was no less intense than the game against The Pas. Penalties could have hurt the Bombers, but the weathered most of the storm. Most, because this time the ref, who did not let the teams play, called the game with eight minutes to play in the third period, after tossing three quarters of the Bomber team and half of the Swan River team out of the game. The Bombers were up 5-2 at the time, and Robert Moore played superb in goal. Because of the odd circumstances surrounding the game, the Bombers will have to wait for Hockey Manitoba to make a final decision on the tournament winner. The Bombers were told by the Dauphin ref that because Swan River started a line brawl, which caused the Bombers bench to shorten even more, the Bombers would likely get the victory. All in all, we see improvement in play, attitude, confidence and some improvement in self discipline through out the whole team. The 'AA' Bombers will need to be completely on track to be ready for the March Provincials in Steinbach. The Midget 'AA' Bombers hope to get back on track this weekend as they visit Norway House for league play.
