Flin Flon Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch called the continuation of the province's university tuition freeze and 10 per cent rebate "a positive step by the government." With the release of the new Manitoba budget on Monday, university students across the province learned that the freeze and rebate will remain in place for a fifth straight year. "The support of the government that allows increased accessibility for Manitobans to pursue post-secondary education is a positive step," said Superintendent Veitch. The superintendent said tuition fees are one factor that may deter students from furthering their education beyond high school. Other factors he mentioned included accommodation costs and the hard time some students have with relocating to a large city from a smaller community. In an interview with the Winnipeg Free Press, Finance Minister Greg Selinger would not or could not say whether the freeze will continue beyond the 2004-05 school year. "One budget at a time Ñ we'll talk again next year, I'm sure," he told the newspaper.
