Flin Flon and area raised a total of $2,730 for cancer research through the Terry Fox Run this year. The top contributor was Many Faces Education Centre, where 100 students and staff members raised $840 in memory of Charlie Mott, who recently died of cancer. In Flin Flon, 75 participants enjoyed a walk on the boardwalk or a jog to Channing on Sunday. Participants enjoyed free ice cream from Mike's Ice N' Burger Hut after the run. Organizer Aimee Deans says that next year, they are planning on changing the route of the run, so the 10 km runners don't have to run the same route twice. It was the 23rd Annual Terry Fox Run, and Canadians from Port Coquitlam, B.C. to Kabul, Afghanistan hit the roads in more than 1,100 communities. Hundreds of thousands of people participate in the event every year. In Fox's home town of Port Coquitlam, B.C. fellow marathoner Rick Hansen and Fox's parents also took part. The largest participant was in Bowmanville, Ontario where an elephant helped start the run. Hundreds of Canadian troops in Afghanistan also took part, raising about $2,000 as they ran in the hot, thin air of their dusty camps in the Kabul area. The goal this year was to beat last-year's fundraising record of 22-million dollars. More than 300-million dollars has been raised in previous runs.
