Politicians, if they hope to be successful, must always perform a careful juggling act with taxes and services. Taxes are of course necessary to provide citizens with the services they need or want. Yet if rates get too high, citizens will demand change. A new poll may help elected officials in Manitoba in this regard. A survey of 800 Manitoba residents found that 55 per cent would choose higher taxes over cuts to services. The poll also found that 56 per cent of respondents believe municipal governments lack the funds to fulfill their responsibilities. The poll, conducted earlier this year by Western Opinion Research, is considered accurate within 3.46 per cent 95 times out of 100.
