Parade proposal draws applause

Last week’s Santa Parade of Lights contained its share of magical moments, but none more so than one involving a long-time Flin Flon couple.

Ron Mendro, a member of the Flin Flon Fire Dept., and girlfriend Lucy Martin rode in the parade on the fire department’s holiday-decorated side-by-side.

Without telling Lucy, Ron had his colleagues carry a rolled-up banner. As the parade neared its end, the men walked in front of the couple and unfurled the banner, revealing a question: Lucy will you marry me?

The side-by-side stopped. Ron climbed out of the vehicle and, down on one knee, popped the question more formally.

Surprised and no doubt elated, Lucy said yes, and paradewatchers on both sides of the street broke out in applause.

Asked why he chose such a memorable way to propose, Ron simply said, “It just seemed like it was the right time.”

Ron and Lucy have been together for some time. He works in plant protection at Hudbay while she works in accounting at the company.
