A Manitoba RCMP officer is facing charges for an offence that occurred in Flin Flon last summer.

The RCMP member, identified in the investigation as Const. Geremy Newbury, faces a charge of improper storage of a firearm after allegedly leaving a service weapon unsecured in a Flin Flon hotel room while on duty last summer.

According to a report from the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), the officer allegedly left a service weapon behind in the room after checking out of the hotel on August 11.

IIU was notified of the incident four days later. No injuries or damage to property were reported as a result of the offence.

After reviewing the case, IIU determined a criminal charge was warranted.

In a press release, IIU civilian director Zane Tessler was quoted as being “satisfied there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred.”

Newbury, who is not a member of Flin Flon RCMP, has been summoned to appear in provincial court in Flin Flon on Feb. 1.
