Partial Hudbay strike continues

As IAM Local 1848’s job action entered its fourth day Tuesday, there appeared to be little hope the strike would conclude anytime soon. IAM reported Monday afternoon there had been no communication with Hudbay.

As IAM Local 1848’s job action entered its fourth day Tuesday, there appeared to be little hope the strike would conclude anytime soon.

IAM reported Monday afternoon there had been no communication with Hudbay. Hudbay continued to defend a final offer presented to the union last week.

Meanwhile, for the second day in a row, long vehicle lineups stretched from near the Hudbay main gate down onto the Perimeter Highway.

IAM picketers are delaying drivers – employees and contractors alike – from entering through the main gate. Some drivers have reported waiting in line for more than four or five hours.

Picket lines have also gone up at two entry points to Hudbay property along the Perimeter Highway, as well as near the Lalor mine in Snow Lake.

Hudbay says it intends to continue operations and meet production targets without the 180 IAM members, who represent 12 per cent of its Flin Flon-Snow Lake workforce.

None of the other Hudbay unions have held strike votes.
