Hapnot Collegiate students got the chance to trade grade 9 for a 9-to-5 job.
The students took part in Take Our Kids to Work Day, an initiative meant to educate and interest local teens in the workforce.
Instead of heading to class Wednesday, students were sent to workplaces with either their parents or assigned workers.
“Almost all of our grade 9s were placed out in the community with parents, friends or relatives to job shadow for the day,” said Linda Lowe, youth mentor coordinator for the Flin Flon School Division.
The students observed a wide range of careers, learning the daily ins and outs of the occupations.
“Some of the careers they took part in are administration, finance, dentistry, teaching, health and a variety of trades,” said Lowe.
Students not assigned to a workplace stayed at Hapnot and received career advice and job interview tips from Jolene Gardiner of the Flin Flon Aboriginal Friendship Centre.
“It is more than just a day of fun away from school,” said Lowe. “It’s an opportunity to understand the importance of staying in school by seeing firsthand the skills required in the workforce today.”
