Nominations for local Saskatchewan elections, including for Creighton and Denare Beach, open up this week. Here’s what you need to know.
On election day, three different polls will take place in communities near Flin Flon. In Creighton, voters will cast ballots for Creighton’s mayor and town council, while Denare Beach will do the same for the community’s mayor and village council. Voters will also cast ballots for the board of trustees for the Creighton School Division, which administrates Creighton Community School.
For both Creighton and Denare Beach, the call for nominations officially opened Sept. 18 and will continue on until nomination day Oct. 9. Nomination paperwork can be received and later filed at the relevant local office. All nominees, by Saskatchewan law, have to be at least 18 years of age, have to have lived in Saskatchewan for at least six months before filing, have to have lived in the relevant community for at least three months before filing and must not be otherwise disqualified.
Regular election day polling will take place from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Nov. 13. In Creighton, voters can cast their ballots at the Creighton Town Office, while in Denare Beach, votes can be cast at the Denare Beach Village Office.
For Creighton, an official notice of poll will be announced Oct. 11, with an advance poll held from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. Nov. 4 at the town office.
Both communities will elect one mayor and six local councillors.
For Saskatchewan public school boards - including Creighton School Division - the call for nominations can begin no later than Sept. 24, with nomination forms accepted until Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. Candidates will have one day to withdraw their names from the polls before nominations hold out. If not enough candidates step forward, a second call for nominations will go out as early as possible following Oct. 10, with a deadline of Oct. 23 if needed.
The first advance polls will take place starting Oct. 29 and ending Nov. 9, with the final election day coming Nov. 13.
For the Creighton School Division, voters will cast their ballots for five trustee positions, with one trustee representing the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation. Nomination paperwork can be picked up by calling the school division at (306) 688-5825.
