The Flin Flon RCMP has a new top cop – at least for now.
Stacy Wiens has taken over as interim sergeant following the departure of Sgt. Shayne Smith last month.
“The transition into the interim sergeant position has been relatively smooth,” says Wiens, “due to the support, strong work ethic of the current members posted to the Flin Flon detachment along with the support staff.”
Now in his fourth year with the Flin Flon RCMP, Wiens says priorities for the detachment include a downtown strategy to combat public drunkenness.
“Our officers are conducting foot patrols during peak periods in [an] attempt to curb intoxicated persons from being on the street and disturbing Main Street patrons,” he says.
Police are also focused on their offender management program.
“When repeat offenders are either convicted or still going through the court process and placed on conditions, a file is opened and the police make a concentrated effort to ensure that the conditions are being followed,” says Wiens. “If not, the offender is arrested and remanded in custody.”
As of April 1, 2015, 13 such files have been opened and 10 have concluded with the arrest of the offender, he says.
“Our members do a great job with these files,” Wiens says, “with fastest turnaround time from when an offender was released on conditions and back in custody was five days.”
Drug investigations are another priority, he says.
Easygoing with a common-sense approach, Wiens joined the Flin Flon detachment in July 2012 following an initial five-and-a-half-year posting in Shoal Lake, Manitoba.
A married father of two, he joined the RCMP later than many of his peers – he was 34 – with the full support of his family.
It is not known when the RCMP will name a permanent detachment commander for Flin Flon.
Sgt. Smith, the previous detachment commander, left last month after being promoted to staff sergeant at the Swan River RCMP detachment.
