Ottawa - Police suspect arson after a major fire destroyed about a dozen businesses in east-end Ottawa. The blaze broke out at the McArthur Plaza in the Vanier district at 2:45 a.m. Sunday. Earlier reports said the fire was caused by an explosion, but firefighters said blasts from a restaurant came later. The fire was so intense at one point that police evacuated nearby apartment buildings. More than 50 people had to leave their homes. Police say the fire destroyed a supermarket, bank and several other businesses in the plaza. Damages are estimated in the millions of dollars. Yellowknife - Canada is trying a new tactic in the 30-year-old dispute with the United States over the boundary under the Beaufort Sea. By mapping the seabed using radar, the government will take a step towards establishing sovereignty under international law. The 2004 budget allocated $51 million over 10 years to map the Arctic continental shelf. Canada claims the border under the Beaufort Sea runs straight from the Alaska-Northwest Territories border. The U.S. says it angles east from the shoreline. At stake is a huge volume of sub-sea oil and gas. Edmonton - As more rain came down Saturday, crews continued cleaning up the damage from flooding in parts of Edmonton. About 50 millimetres of rain fell in one hour Friday evening, causing some water-logged basements and a few sewer backups.
