Traffic on Highway 106 outside of Creighton was at the mercy of a massive sinkhole yesterday. Authorities did not permit anyone to drive or even walk over the gorge, about ten kilometres from Creighton. The sinkhole formed after the Department of Highways thawed out a frozen culvert beneath the road. It's believed that when the water again flowed, it did so with such force that it eroded the soil around the culvert, causing the road to dip. The centre of the road curved downward while the outer edges slowly crumbled and fell to the plunging ground. Creighton RCMP Sgt. Mark LeMaistre, who attended the scene, estimated that the chasm would eventually sink to ten feet deep. See 'Road' P.# Con't from P.# The Highway Department planned to break up the sunken section of road and temporarily fill the sinkhole. At press time it was not clear when the road would again be ready for traffic. One report said the road would open this morning at the earliest. A handful of surprised travelers on either side of the road patiently waited for the problem to be fixed while others turned around. Highway 106, also called the Hanson Lake Road, is the only road link between Creighton and Denare Beach and the rest of Saskatchewan.
