A deal to sell 65 abandoned homes in Leaf Rapids is expected to be complete by next month, the Brandon Sun reports. Trevor Gloyn of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC), which owns the homes, told the newspaper that the deal should be done by the end of the year. The newspaper did not specify who might purchase the homes. A spokesperson for CMHC could not be reached for comment. CMHC took ownership of the houses after the owners left them behind when the northern town's largest employer, Ruttan mine, closed in 2002. The population of Leaf Rapids, northwest of Thompson, reportedly sits at just over 400 people, down from the 1,300 during the time the mine operated. -J.N.
