Hudbay and the Town of Snow Lake have put pen to paper on a deal that will see a new camp, business park and housing subdivision built in the community.

The company announced that an agreement had been reached with Snow Lake’s town council, just in time for the company to begin ramping up operations within the area.

Under the new agreement between Hudbay and the Town, a new permanent dormitory will be built, trailers will be moved from the old camp to the new camp site and a new business park will be built. The site itself, along with parking lots within the area, will be expanded.

Along with agreeing to build on and expand the new camp site, Hudbay also will provide $2 million toward developing a new subdivision in English Bay, planning on having 30 permanent lots developed in the area.

“Hudbay and the Town of Snow Lake are pleased to have achieved this significant milestone, as it provides multiple living arrangement options for our employees and their families as we transition to a larger operation in Snow Lake in 2022,” said Hudbay Manitoba Business Unit vice-president Rob Assabgui in a business update issued Dec. 18.

“I would like to thank the entire Snow Lake town council for their time this past year to reach this mutually beneficial agreement.”

Discussions between Hudbay and the Town began in earnest in 2019, not long after a fire broke out at the existing mine camp in the community. The Town and Hudbay quickly set up a new, interim camp while mine workers and camp staff stayed in temporary accommodations around the community. According to the company, the plan is to improve that interim camp and make it the company’s new first choice for temporary worker housing.

“Over the course of the year, we have been meeting regularly with the town council to discuss potential making this the permanent camp,” said Assabgui.

The agreement will cover the expected life of Hudbay’s operations in Snow Lake - the company’s Lalor mine is currently anticipated to be in operation until about 2030.
