With Hudbay beginning to outline its future plans with Flin Flon employees, company spokesman Scott Brubacher released the following statement Tuesday in response to questions from The Reminder:

"With the pending closures of the Reed and 777 mines, and without a replacement anchor mine, changes are inevitable for the Flin Flon operations. We are in the process of holding meetings with employees to tell them what we know at present and how we plan to go forward. The meetings lay out a range of objectives and possible outcomes, but it’s too early to say today exactly what will happen or when.

"What we want people to know right now is that Hudbay wants to arrive at an outcome that is as good as it can be for as many people as possible. Managing the change in Flin Flon in the next few years is a job that involves the community, local government and Hudbay. Hudbay will do its part, which includes keeping people informed. But the process is a work in progress, so information will change as circumstances change."

Hudbay has said Reed mine, located between Flin Flon and Snow Lake, is expected to close in 2018. The 777 mine in Flin Flon has been expected to close around 2020.

The Reminder will have more on the situation at Hudbay in our Friday print edition.
