Hapnot Collegiate celebrates Class of 2015

One by one they lined the stage, their sophisticated caps and smooth gowns forming a sea of red and black.

Some smiled confidently, eager to take the next step in their young lives. Others bobbed their knees nervously, unsure of what comes next.

This was the scene last Friday, June 26 as the 49 members of Hapnot Collegiate’s Class of 2015 celebrated their graduation.

“Take with you all that we have learned growing up together in Flin Flon,” valedictorian Mackenzie Grove urged her fellow graduates.

Standing at a podium on stage at the Whitney Forum, she said life is about balance and that people must make time for themselves, their family and their friends.

With about 600 family members, friends and guests lining chairs and stands, Grove urged the grads to continue moving beyond life’s obstacles.

Guest speaker George Trevor, who taught some of the graduates dating back to Grade 7, struck an equally upbeat tone.

“Your new beginning is tomorrow,” said Trevor, now vice-principal of École McIsaac School.

In dispensing words of wisdom, he advised students to be kind, avoid jumping to conclusions, get involved with their community and put in the sacrifice success demands.

Combined, top graduates walked away with nearly $50,000 in scholarships and bursaries, the most significant being Hudbay’s WA Green Bursary worth $3,000 a year for up to four years.

Rebecca Kozar, the recipient of that bursary, also accepted the Governor General Bronze Medal for the highest academic average among graduates, along with other bursaries and awards.

In a first for Hapnot, Jeffrey Odegaard graduated with a French Immersion diploma, having earned the necessary 14 high school credits en français.

Not surprisingly, he also received the French Immersion Scholarship, along with two bursaries.

The ceremony concluded with the sharply dressed grads linking arms and marching down Main Street, though the procession was nearly cancelled due to rain.

The students’ safe grad celebration followed at the arena with volunteers ensuring everyone got home safely.
