A pair of dedicated École McIsaac School students cleaned up at last weekend’s Red River Heritage Fair in Winnipeg.
Niki Keramydas and Cassidy Alexander won three awards, including an honour from the Manitoba Historical Society “for a project dealing with Manitoba history.”
The grade 4 girls’ project covered the origins and culture of Métis people.
The girls also earned nods from Aboriginal Circle of Educators for a project “that includes an Aboriginal perspective” and the Manitoba Museum, which lauded the project for “dealing with Manitoba history, with resources cited from the Manitoba Museum.”
Students between grades 4 and 11 were eligible for the three awards.
In addition, the McIsaac delegation won the Heritage Fair’s school spirit award.
“The fair was excellent. The girls walked away with three of the major awards. The school got the school spirit award,” said Susanne Westhaver. “This year, though, the results all go to Niki and Cassidy.”
In total, 13 local students qualified for the fair after placing at the Flin Flon Heritage Fair in February.
Along with an entourage of parents and teachers, the students took part in a series of workshops at the Manitoba Museum and took in planetarium and science shows.
“They got to see so many other types of projects. Many of them came away with ideas for next year’s fair,” said Westhaver.
