The end may be near for Flin Flon’s tourism sign on Highway 6.
Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce member Tom Heine brought the issue of the sign up following a discussion on regional tourism at the group’s Jan. 23 meeting.
Heine called the sign a “perpetual eyesore,” adding, “For $10 worth of gasoline and a package of matches, I’ll take care of it!”
Chamber president Karen MacKinnon responded by telling council that the sign’s demolition appeared to be close.
“The city has been dealing with that and the issue should be rectified shortly. The details will come later, but the sign on Highway 6 is going to be dealt with,” she said.
The sign, located south of Eriksdale on northern Manitoba’s main road link to Winnipeg, has been in a state of disrepair for several years. Paint on the wooden sign has flaked off and at least one large portion of the sign is entirely missing. The sign also incorrectly lists the city’s distance from Eriksdale as 580 km – between 40 and 50 km shorter than the actual distance.
Efforts to have the sign either redone or demolished have been going on for years, led by the City of Flin Flon and the Chamber. The sign, formerly owned by the Chamber, was signed over to a landowner near Eriksdale last year.
“Since I’ve been on chamber, over and over again that sign has been brought up,” said MacKinnon.
