HBMS has given the green light to a request to place signage at the Whitney Forum in honour of a legendary edition of the Flin Flon Bombers. The City of Flin Flon had asked for permission to erect the signage, as the Company owns the arena property. The idea orginated with the Flin Flon Bombers, who wrote the City asking that the arena be given the street address "57 Memorial Cup Drive" in recognition of the 1957 Bombers, the underdog team that stunned the hockey world by capturing the coveted Memorial Challenge Cup. Flin Flon Municipal Administrator Larry Fancy said yesterday the City is now trying to clarify whether the Bombers are interested in a street sign or signage on the Whitney Forum itself. See 'Win' P.# Con't from P.# Once the matter is cleared up, Fancy said, the City will speak with Forum staff to discuss the most appropriate course of action. Fancy said he would like to think the project could be completed in the near future. When asked about the Bombers' idea last fall, Mayor Dennis Ballard was favourably inclined. "That win was a big moment in our history," he said. "That was unheard of, for a small little town to take that Cup. Nobody thought that could happen, and the best part about it was that the team was made up of several local players." Even Bomber players who have worn the Maroon and White in recent years are said to be quite aware of the 1957 team and what it did for hockey in Flin Flon. The Flin Flon Bombers defeated the Ottawa Canadiens to capture the 1957 Memorial Challenge Cup. The legendary victory inspired the popular local musical Bombertown, performed at the R.H. Channing Auditorium to rave reviews in 1999 and 2000.4/27/2004
