Two Flin Flon students really know their Canadian heritage.

Gradey Bedford and Chloe Reitlo were two of seven local students to participate in the Red River Heritage Fair earlier this month in Winnipeg.

Gradey placed in the top three of two categories for his project, “Quest for the Northwest Passage,” while Chloe earned a spot in the Youth Citizen program for “Flin Flon Smokestack.”

Chloe is one of 14 students across Manitoba competing in a video project with the hopes of finishing in the top two later this year.

The top two video projects from the province will move on to compete at the national level in the fall in Ottawa.

Five other students from École McIsaac School and Ruth Betts Community School participated in the Heritage Fair with projects on Casa Loma, LGBT rights in Canada, Jacques Plante and Laura Hannant.

“We learned how much history Canada has,” said Gradey.

Better grasp

All of the students agreed they had a good grasp on Canada’s history before the fair but a better understanding at the end of it.

The students not only presented projects at the Heritage Fair, but were also able to explore other projects from students across the southern part of the province.

Terry Fox, the Forks, the Great Depression, Canada at the Winter Olympics and refugees were just some of the topics explored by 182 projects this year.

The eight Flin Flon students who earned a spot at the fair – though only seven were able to attend – did so by qualifying at the district-wide heritage fair earlier this year.

After the latest fair, the students took a tour through the Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
