Flin Flon students from grades 4 to 10 wowed visitors with their historical exhibits at the public showing of the Heritage Fair, held Wednesday.
The Heritage Fair, hosted by the Flin Flon School Division for the third time, gives students an opportunity to dive deep into a subject of personal interest.
“The only requirement is that it has Canadian relevance,” says Michelle Reitlo, a staff advisor for the fair.
The result was a gym full of 60–plus dynamic exhibits for which students used words, pictures and props to convey their learning. Subjects ranged from prominent Canadian celebrities to local historical events.
A panel of judges weighed in on the top presentations.
“The judges evaluate the historical research and written work, how well the students interview, the display or presentation, and how creative or original the project is,” says Reitlo.
In May, the 14 students who created the winning projects will travel to the Red River Heritage Fair in Winnipeg to share their work with a province-wide audience. The creators of the top three projects also received a gift certificate.
In addition to the exhibits in the evening, during the school day elementary students took part in heritage sessions in which they explored topics such as mine rescue and the RCMP, and learned about raising a tipi, caribou tufting and beading.
