So many events around the world have been cancelled due to COVID-19, but organizers in Flin Flon are trying to ensure Culture Days 2020 doesn’t join that list.
The annual fall celebration of northern culture and traditions is slated to go ahead, in some form or another, likely at its traditional date at the end of next month.
“We’re coming up with some interesting ideas for Culture Days,” said Flin Flon Arts Council cultural coordinator and Culture Days organizer Crystal Kolt. It’s been members of the public who have helped lead the charge with new ideas for events this year.
“I was thinking that it would just be, ‘Let’s just leave it for this year,’ but people are calling with really interesting ideas for Culture Days.”
Previous Culture Days celebrations in Flin Flon have involved over 100 separate events. This year’s Culture Days won’t be anywhere near that grandiose. Several events may take place online only, with other in-person events using social distancing and keeping in line with public health measures.
“It looks like there are going to be events happening and there's some really fascinating opportunities for people to experience Culture Days, both in-person and online. It’s as much a surprise to me as anybody else, but it looks like people are really missing it and really wanting to have Culture Days events this year,” Kolt said.
Exact plans and a list of events are not ready for full release. Events and new ideas are being added to the schedule and are subject to change due to availability and any changes with Flin Flon's COVID-19 situation.
More plans will be announced after the completion of some of the Arts Council’s summer programming, including the Summer Concert Series.
“Once that is out of the way, it looks like it’s going to go full steam ahead,” Kolt said.
