Bans on all fires are now in effect for most of Saskatchewan and for Flin Flon.

In Saskatchewan, a ban is now in effect for all fires on Crown land, burn notification areas and provincial parks and recreation sites in Saskatchewan south of the Churchill River. The measure includes Creighton, Denare Beach and all surrounding communities.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment issued the ban on May 14, citing dry conditions across the province and increased fire danger as reason for the ban.

Saskatchewan Wildfire Management considers almost all areas of the province, including northeastern Saskatchewan, at either at high or extreme risk on the provincial fire weather index.

For good measure, the both Creighton and Denare Beach have issued their own municipal fire bans. All fires in Creighton have been banned since May 14, while Denare Beach has had a fire ban in effect since May 8.

In addition, a municipal fire ban for Flin Flon was declared on May 22, banning all fires within city limits including in approved fire pits.

As of May 22, Manitoba Sustainable development considered the area surrounding Flin Flon at extreme risk for man-caused potential ignition of fires and at high risk of lightning potential ignitions.

No fires are currently burning within 100 kilometres of Flin Flon on either side of the provincial border.

One fire, considered by Saskatchewan Wildfire Management to be not contained, is burning near Sandy Bay. Wildfire Management first responded to the fire on May 21 and estimates the blaze to be around seven hectares in size.
