Creighton’s mayor received a special Crown honour for volunteering and community service last month.
Mayor Bruce Fidler received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal at a ceremony in La Ronge Jan. 14, receiving the honour for dedicated service to his community. Fidler has served as Creighton’s mayor since 1994, the longest time anyone in the town's history has occupied the mayor’s seat.
Fidler said he was first informed he’d be receiving the honour through a letter from the office of Cumberland MLA Doyle Vermette - he received the letter a couple of weeks before the day of the actual ceremony. Of the ceremony itself, Fidler said he was presented with the medal by Saskatchewan Lieutenant Governor Russ Mirasty.
“It was very nice. There were a number of people who received the award... it was a very nice presentation. The Lieutenant Governor was there and pinned on the metals, things like that. It was not super official or fancy, but it was very formal,” said Fidler.
“It was very nice. It was an honour to receive it, I feel.”
Fidler says he feels honoured to receive the medal, adding that being given it by Mirasty, who he met early on in his time as mayor, made the day even more special.
“I felt honoured and I still feel honoured to have received this, especially having it pinned on by Russ, because I’ve probably known him for about 25 years, long before he became lieutenant governor. It was very nice to have him do that,”
It is not the first honour received by Fidler for his work - he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubillee medal in 2012 for the same reasons he received his latest honour. Fidler said receiving the two medals are among hs greatest achievements.
“This and receiving Diamond Jubilee award were top of the line, top of the list,” he said.
“I’m very honored to have received them. They're right up there.”
