Infrastructure

The Town of Creighton will not finish its biggest infrastructure project on time.

Minor delays in the Town’s $4 million water and sewer replacement project will lead to some parts of the project being unfinished this winter.

Parts of the project that will not be finished on time include sidewalk replacement and pavement on Creighton Avenue, along with line replacements between Prince Street and Lamb Street near the water treatment plant.

“The only thing that caused them a slowdown were difficulties that they ran into – bedrock that needed to be blasted and a few things like that, a few days of bad weather,” said Mayor Bruce Fidler at the Oct. 25 Creighton council meeting.

Fidler, who was in Regina on Town business, joined the meeting via telephone.

The firm responsible for the work, JRT Excavating, will return to Creighton next June to finish construction.

“They’ll be coming back as soon as the frost is out of the ground to finish it up. It’ll be a short term and a short stretch to finish it up,” said Fidler.

The change in schedule is not expected to cause any negative effects for residents or any additional spending for the Town.

“Just because they’re not getting it all done this year, that does not add to the cost of the budget at all,” said Fidler.

Work on the water and sewer improvements is slated to continue through November.

Regional EDO

A suitable candidate for a new economic development officer for the region has not been found.

Councillors discussed the job vacancy during the meeting, saying that interviews had been held for the position.

“The interview process is just finishing up,” said Alderman Dan Hlady, serving as deputy mayor in Fidler’s absence. Deputy mayor Colleen Stallard and acting deputy mayor Kory Eastman were not present at the meeting.

Fidler added that the Regional Economic Development Group – of which he is a founding member – has not yet found a suitable candidate for the job.

“We’re interviewing one more person. If that one doesn’t work out, then we’ll have to re-advertise,” said Mayor Fidler.

Radio tower

A precautionary boil water advisory was announced for Creighton last week.

The advisory, which was announced on Tuesday afternoon, was rescinded on Thursday evening after water sample tests proved the water was safe.

Council also approved the erection of a radio tower by an area resident. The resident, a ham radio enthusiast, will be building the tower in his backyard to assist in his hobby. The tower will be approximately one metre by one metre in size.
