Creighton Community School graduates wrote the final chapter of their high school careers last Friday, June 19.
Valedictorian Taylor Kryschuk, one of 17 graduates, told classmates, teachers, friends and family members that “it takes courage” to achieve all that they had.
Draped with the golden yellow sash, Kryschuk delivered a sentimental speech reliving moments from years past and paying tribute to all those who helped the grads reach their milestone.
The tight bond between the graduates was evident to everyone in the school gymnasium. The young men and women sat atop a stage, celebrating each other’s academic awards and scholarships.
The 17 graduates represented Creighton Community School’s smallest graduating class to date, with Kryschuk saying this makes it harder for the students to part ways.
Hudbay’s coveted scholarship, worth $2,000 a year for four years, went to Khariz Kawa following a close three-way race.
Kawa received the award, presented by senior mine geologist Brett Pearson, with a grade-point average above 95 per cent.
Kawa covered her mouth in disbelief as her name was called to accept the award from Pearson.
In addition to the Hudbay scholarship, Kawa received the Top Academic Achievement Award from school principal Stacy Lair.
Guest speaker Noelle Gogol relived some of the finer moments she shared as the group’s Grade 7 teacher.
She said while the class looked well put together on stage, she encouraged the audience to think back to those same students at the age of 12 and laughed.
Gogol, whom the students chose as their guest speaker, shared humourous stories from the students’ past as well as words of encouragement for the years to come.
The graduates then received their diplomas – one step closer to the end of their high school careers – as teachers shared personal stories of each of them.
Graduates, presenters and audience members shared tears as sentimental and funny stories depicted the past 12 years of the students’ lives.
With diplomas in hand, the students joined for the final time on the Creighton Community School stage as they tossed their hats high into the air to celebrate.
Emotions ran high as they hugged each other, congratulated one another and wrote the words of this final chapter.
