Rumours of a floor being fully shut down at Flin Flon General Hospital have been overblown, according to an official within the Northern Health Region (NHR), but some changes are coming.

Many functions at the hospital’s fifth floor will be moved to the hospital’s third floor.

“We have noticed that bed utilization has been out of sync for a number of months and we have taken steps to correct that by transitioning patients and staff from the fifth floor to the third floor,” said a statement from an NHR spokesperson supplied to The Reminder.

The changes came, according to the spokesperson, when the NHR found ways to find “efficiencies” with current services.

“We have identified an opportunity to achieve some efficiencies which are expected to better balance workload among nursing on a number of units or floors thereby enhancing patient care in the hospital.” It is unclear whether the efficiencies referred to are financial or personnel in nature.

The spokesperson said the fifth floor has not been closed for medical care and operations. Day surgery at the hospital will continue to involve admittance to the fifth floor.

It is unclear if the change in operations will mean anything changes in care, staffing or investment for NHR.
