Creighton MLA Joan Beatty may be new to the political scene, but that didn't stop Saskatchewan Premier Lorne Calvert from giving her two prestigious positions within his Cabinet. Beatty has been named the new Minister of Culture, Youth and Recreation as well as the Provincial Secretary. One of her priorities will be to provide leadership in increasing the involvement of young people in government and public policy. For the personable Beatty, it's perhaps a perfect fit. Beatty replaces Joanne Crofford as the new Minister of Culture, Youth and Recreation. Crofford has been appointed the new Minister of Community Resources and Employment. Earlier this month, Beatty won her seat by a landslide victory in the Cumberland constituency, securing 69 per cent of the popular vote. She presented voters with a platform that stressed the importance of education and retaining young people, infrastructure improvements and preservation of the environment and natural resources. Provincially, Beatty's New Democratic Party edged out their conservative rivals, the Saskatchewan Party, with 44.6 per cent of the popular vote.
