Needy residents will enjoy about 300 lbs. of free ground beef courtesy of the Manitoba government. The province announced yesterday it will give $20,000 to Winnipeg Harvest to provide Manitoba beef to food banks across the province, including the Lord's Bounty Food Bank in Flin Flon. This will be the second beef shipment of about 300 lbs. the food bank will receive this year through the partnership. The previous shipment arrived about two months ago. Dennis Hydamaka, food distribution chairman for Lord's Bounty, was thrilled to hear of the second shipment, noting that this is the time of year when donations typically drop off. "It will be a tremendous help for the summer months," he said. In total, some 12,800 lbs. of beef will be sent to 24 food banks rural and urban food banks over a period of eight weeks. The provincial funding is being provided under the Made-in-Manitoba Beef Fund, established in 2003 to increase slaughter capacity and consumption of provincially-produced beef. "We are also helping producers and processors to maintain their production capacities through the promotion of beef consumption." At their slaughter facilities around the province, participating members of the Manitoba Meat Processors Association will process cattle and provide the ground beef to food banks for distribution, which Winnipeg Harvest will coordinate.4/23/2004
