One of Canada’s most esteemed dance companies will soon visit Flin Flon.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet will perform at the RH Channing Auditorium this Tuesday, Nov. 22. Sixteen danceurs and danseuses from the RWB’s professional training program are slated to perform.
“The dancers that are coming are going to be the next artists in the company,” said RWB school director Arlene Minkhorst. “It’s the one step before they make their professional debuts.”
The dancers will perform selections of several styles of dance, ranging from classical ballet to folk dance to more contemporary pieces.
“I think people can expect a very entertaining expression of youth, vitality, art and dance,” said Minkhorst.
The RWB has performed in Flin Flon several times in the past.
“We love going there because the community is very interested in the arts and we’re always very well received,” said Minkhorst. “It’s really exciting to come back.”
It’s been more than four years since the RWB last came to Flin Flon. The group performed at the RH Channing Auditorium in May 2012 as part of celebrations for Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee.
“The very first tour the company did was to Flin Flon, their very first tour in their existence,” noted Crystal Kolt, cultural coordinator with the Flin Flon Arts Council.
“It’s definitely not a recital, it’s a performance, but it’s also not just one production or story from beginning to end,” said Minkhorst. “If someone isn’t as experienced with classical ballet and doesn’t know as much about it, I think it’s a very good way to be introduced to the art form.”
