Flin Flon Culture Days kicks off this weekend, with the area playing host to a wide range of events early on.

The first event will be a dreamcatcher-making workshop at the Uptown Emporium Sept, 20, starting at 4 p.m. The workshop is free and registration can be done by calling the Emporium at (204) 687-4913.

Perhaps the biggest event of the bunch will be the Wild Things Market at Creekside Park, which will take place twice over the weekend, running from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on both Sept. 21 and 22. The market is a chance for local artisans, builders and businesses to show off their wares in one common outdoor space, usually surrounded by orange fall foliage. Admission to the market is free, but goods will cost money to purchase.

Other events will also take place nearby while the Wild Things Market goes on, including a family pumpkin patch and kids story time from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 21. A pancake breakfast, organized by the Flin Flon Lions Club, will also take place at the site from 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 21. Another event taking place Sept. 22 will be the Bombers’ annual community bunk hockey game, taking place at the Creekside bunk just north of the market site starting at 2 p.m. The game is free to participate in, but participants are asked to bring sticks and either street hockey balls or pucks.

The first of two tours of the Main Street area will happen Sept. 21, running from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and showing the history of the uptown area. Originally built on a marsh near the Hudbay compound in the early 20th century, uptown still shows flashes of history for those with eyes to see it. The tour is free - a second one will be held Sept. 28 for anyone unable to attend the first one.

The Walk Through a Volcano geological tour will also take place Sept. 22, starting at North Avenue Park near the City’s water tower. The tour will show the millions and millions of years that led to the rock formations Flin Flon is built on, showing interesting geological formations in the rocks above Foster Park and the nearby area. Admission for the event is free - it starts at 1 p.m.

The NorVA Centre will play host to Pictures at an Exhibition Sept. 22, the annual event featuring local musician Mark Kolt and a selection of art pieces created by regional artists. Kolt, a classically trained pianist who studied at the famed Juilliard School in New York City, performs improvised pieces based on selections picked by the audience. The show will take place starting at 2 p.m. and admission is free.

Other events, including the Wild Rice Cabaret, will take place later during Culture Days celebrations. The events this year will continue until Oct. 13.

More information on planned events can be found at the Flin Flon Culture Days website at culturedays.ca.
