“Don’t play with your food!”
Denare Beach Winter Festival organizers made an exception to this classic parental rule last weekend, when winners from the turkey curling event took home the frozen poultry that had served as curling rocks for the duration of the Friday night event.
Wrapped in plastic and duct tape, with a cupboard handle taped to each “rock”, the turkeys were well-tenderized after several rounds of enthusiastic play among eight teams.
The village’s Denareplex community centre was the nucleus for the two-day festival, which was largely run by volunteers of all ages in the 820-person community.
Indoors, music, bingo and cribbage tournaments reigned supreme, alongside a home business sale, penny parade and fish pond.
For those willing to brave the windy outdoors on Saturday, Amisk Lake offered plenty of diversions: horse-drawn sleigh rides, snowmobile drag racing and a poker derby.
