Open darts tournament this weekend at the Legion

Event draws national champs to join local competitors in hunt for prize

Some of Manitoba and Saskatchewan’s top players, including two former national champions, will participate in the 34th annual Flin Flon Open Dart Tournament this weekend.

The event opens Friday, April 29 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 73 with the blind doubles Papa Krassillowsky memorial competition. Play starts at 8 pm.

On Saturday, April 30 ladies’ doubles and men’s singles will be played in the morning, with a mixed event in the afternoon.

On Sunday, May 1, ladies’ singles and men’s doubles will be played in the morning.

Rory Orvis, who has been a long-time supporter of the Flin Flon Open, and 2014 National Youth Champion Ashtin Bear from Prince Albert, will both compete in singles, doubles and mixed triples events.

Bear will have his eyes firmly fixed on the 170 finish pot that stands at $800 this year, said tournament spokesman Brian Humphreys. Bear is hoping for a repeat performance of the finish that earned him a similar amount in Hudson Bay earlier in the season.

There will also be a separate award for the highest finishing male and female youth.

The tournament is open to the public and people are encouraged to drop in and watch.

“There is no charge for spectators and you should be able to see some terrific darts taking place,” said Humphreys.
