Flin Flon students showed off their historical chops at last week’s Red River Heritage Fair in Winnipeg.

Fourteen students represented their community at the May 5 provincial fair, where Manitoba students presented personal projects on topics relating to Canadian history.

Judges rated each research project on the basis of an oral presentation by the student(s), an interview with judges and an evaluation of the project.

The Flin Flon cohort brought home five awards in total, with Isabel Plamondon winning an Award of Excellence (Top 3 Projects).

Sarah Faktor and Brooklynn Morin won the Technology Award, while Michael Ward won the World War II Award. Isabel Plamondon and Andy Richard shared the Young Citizen Award.

“The kids were all so supportive of each other and were great ambassadors of Flin Flon,” wrote École McIsaac School teacher Christine Williams in a report on the trip.

At the fair, students explored the 220 Canadian projects on display at the University of Winnipeg, and participated in educational sessions.

“Students enjoyed learning how to make spirit pouches, the historical significance of birch bark canoes, and creating videos with Shaw Cable,” Williams wrote.

The students also got a taste of Scottish Highland dancing, watching a performance at lunch and participating in three dances themselves.

The Winnipeg trip concluded with guided tours at the Manitoba Museum and Planetarium.
